Empathy in Action: Grand Forks Public_’s Impact during Poverty Awareness Month

In North Dakota, 1 in every 10 people you encounter is living in poverty. In honor of Poverty Awareness Month, let’s shine a light on the incredible ways Grand Forks Public_ is making a difference in the lives of those in need. At GFP_, compassion and connection are not just words; they’re the heartbeat of our community-focused mission.

Did you know the U.S. ranks second highest in poverty rates among its peer countries? Living in poverty is like navigating a daily challenge course where heating your home, covering rent, and providing essentials for your kids feel like elusive feats. Each day dawns with insecurity, uncertainty, and tough financial choices. Here are six ways GFP_ helps those facing poverty.

1. Providing a safe haven for all. We believe in taking care of our patrons and each other. Poverty can be isolating, but within the walls of GFP_, everyone is warmly welcomed and treated with respect. It’s a safe haven where people connect not only to ideas and possibilities but also to the support of a caring community.

2. Making resources readily available. Our library is a treasure trove of information. We provide free access to a wealth of resources, including job-seeking tools, educational materials, and assistance in navigating social services. We provide access to fresh materials and resources, ensuring that everyone has the tools they need for a journey of self-discovery, personal growth, and success.

3. Offering helpful programming. We regularly host programs designed to uplift and educate. Whether it’s Coffee and Conversation with community partners or financial literacy seminars with local experts, our free programming empowers individuals to take control of their futures.

4. Being fine free. Several years ago, we became a fine-free library. No late fees mean no barriers, especially for those on the journey to conquer life’s challenges. By going fine-free, we’re turning pages of inequality and better supporting our friends facing financial hurdles. It’s about empowering our community and spreading the joy of learning without any worries!

5. Stocking a discreet Care Catalog. Did you know our old library card catalog (located near the front desk) has been repurposed as a “Care Catalog”? It’s stocked and labeled with travel-sized toiletries. Patrons can discreetly help themselves to whatever they need—no questions asked. Special thank you to our Grand Forks Public Friends who helped start this amazing service for our patrons in need!

6. Feeding our community. Ever heard of our #PeopleFirst Pantry? It’s not just a pantry; it’s a beacon of kindness provided by Choice Bank. Located right outside the library, it’s available for anyone to take food or leave food. Because we believe that no one should face an empty stomach. Swing by, pick up what you require, and let’s nourish not just bodies but spirits, too.

In addition to the Food Pantry, we also are proud to serve as a site for the St. Joseph’s Social Care Free Summer Meals program. From June through mid-August, children may come every day and receive free meals at the library.

As we celebrate Poverty Awareness Month in January, let’s remember that change starts with awareness and action. Grand Forks Public_ is not just a place for books; it’s a hub of compassion, innovation, and curiosity—a true playground for everyone.
