6 Ways to Celebrate National Library Week at GFP_

on

National Library Week (April 7-13, 2024) is a time to celebrate the incredible institutions that serve as pillars of knowledge and community in our society. From providing access to books and resources to hosting events that bring people together, libraries play a vital role in enriching lives and fostering learning. This year, as we commemorate National Library Week, let’s explore some meaningful ways to engage with and support our local library.

1. Sign Up for a Library Card

If you haven’t already, National Library Week is the perfect time to sign up for a library card. Library cards grant you access to a treasure trove of resources, including books, eBooks, audiobooks, magazines, movies, music, and more. This resource is completely free for anyone living in Grand Forks County, and it’s just $25/year for those living outside of the county. Take advantage of this invaluable resource and unlock a world of knowledge and entertainment.

2. Attend a Library Event or Program

Did you know an average of 450 people visited Grand Forks Public_ every day in 2023?! Libraries are not just about books; they are vibrant hubs of activity with a wide range of events and programs for people of all ages. Whether it’s a book club meeting, a guest speaker series, a crafting workshop, or a children’s storytime, there’s something for everyone to enjoy at the library. Check out GFP_’s event calendar and attend a program that interests you. It’s a fantastic way to connect with others in the community and expand your horizons.

Not sure where to start? Check out the Partial Solar Eclipse Viewing (April 8 @ 1 p.m.),  National Library Week Read-In (April 8 @ 5:30 p.m.) or Library Trivia Night (April 10 @ 7 p.m.)!

3. Take the Public Input Survey (Open April 1-14, 2024)

Your voice matters! This is your chance to influence the direction of our library. Share your ideas, suggestions, and opinions on how GFP_ can better serve your needs and interests. Your input will help inform decision-making and improve library services for everyone.  Take the brief survey here.

4. Donate to the Curiosity Lab

Consider donating to the Grand Forks Public Library Foundation and support initiatives like the Curiosity Lab. Your support can make a difference in ensuring that our library continues to thrive as a center of learning and exploration.

5. Try a New Library Resource

Explore the vast array of resources that Grand Forks Public_ has to offer. Beyond traditional books and media, we offer unique items through collections like the Library of Things. From technologies and gadgets to board games and LEGO kits, these unconventional offerings allow you to try new hobbies without breaking the bank.

6. Become a Friend for Life

The Grand Forks Public Friends are a group of passionate community champions on a mission to amplify, enrich, and spotlight the library’s public image. From enhancing programming to enriching staff experiences, the Friends make it happen. Join the Friends in their quest to make our library shine even brighter. (Plus, they now offer a Lifetime Membership option!)

National Library Week is a time to celebrate the vital role that libraries play in our communities. By actively participating in the week’s activities, whether through donations, feedback, attendance, or exploration, you contribute to the continued success and relevance of your local library. We do everything a library should and even more things a library shouldn’t. Are you curious? Just GO.
